The Library Isn’t Just for Books

5 July 2008 4 Comments

As you know, homeschoolers love libraries. I have yet to meet a homeschooler that says, “eh, libraries, take them or leave them.” At the library, there is no gatekeeper between the learner and knowledge. At the library, it’s not just about books. There are also movies, magazines, computers, and more. And it’s (almost) all free!

There are at least 27 free things you can get at the library. Does your local library have other free services (or almost free) that you would recommend to others?

You’re right!! I wasn’t too encouraging to a mom who was thinking about homeschooling who (among other red flags) said, “Well, we don’t really ever go to the library.”
One service our library has that I think is so cool: You can check out fine art prints. The’re laminated and come in a big tube with tacky stuff for hanging. We have frequently checked out one or more prints that correspond with an era in history that we’re studying.

You’re so right. We have always loved the library - but have especially appreciated this past year while we were homeschooling. We were recently talking with the principal of the children that my daughter will return to in the fall. She was discussing some of the things she was interested in. The principal, although he was revealing something new to her, said, “You know a really good place for learning? The li-br-ary.” She kind of looked at him like he was an alient. It was one of those ‘duh’ looks. I was a little embarrassed for the principal. He really did sound kind of dumb. LOL Maybe regular school kids don’t go to the public library that much. I don’t know. He sure seemed to think he was revealing something really extraordinary though. LOL

Our public library has some very informative and educational workshops and seminars. We went for a video conference to visit Alaskan Sea life and today we are going for a video conference with The Smithsonean. THey also do craft nights, game nights, drive in Movie Sundays, self defense classes, computer training, SAT PRep classes, etc…. The Public Library is our #1 resource.
