Deschooling Your Teen

4 January 2010 3 Comments

1242305_green_hot_air_balloonIn my experience, even when there are teens involved, parents always need to deschool more than the kids do. It’s most often the parents who worry and stress over what to learn and success and all of that. These are indeed important things to think about, but what we, as parents, often don’t realize, is that in all of our worry and our stressing, we become super hyper focused and lose the larger perspective of the amazing world that is out there for us to discover. We put the worry and the stress above the living and learning that we say we’re trying to achieve.

Deschooling for parents is awakening to the awesome that is in ourselves, and in our kids, and relearning how to get along in the world without the stress and worry of having to check off the list and prove that we’re worth something. Instead, we need to retrain ourselves to just live, learn, and grow into the success that we are destined to be. Angsting gets in the way of this.

Life is a dance. Homeschooling is a dance with children while carrying our baggage.

Thanks for the timely reminder. All of the things I’ve read talked about how long deschooling would take but I don’t think anyone mentioned how long it would *feel* :) It seems we are finally getting to the home stretch and a lot of the trust is starting to pay off, but it’s *tough* at times and reminders are always good.
